Time for a Tune-Up? Here’s What to Expect
If you have children, you’re probably familiar with the yearly well-child visits with a pediatrician.
Pet owners are used to taking their beloved animals to the vet each year for the necessary shots and vaccinations.
What about your vehicle?
It’s recommended that you get your car tuned-up on a regular basis. You should follow the manufacturer’s recommendations to the letter to avoid problems.
What actually does happen when you take your car in?
It turns out that what you’re thinking of when you want a tune-up actually represents a lot of different services.
Usual maintenance services performed
Here’s what to expect during a tune-up:
Battery. The voltage will be checked and the battery charged, if necessary.
Spark plugs. It’s recommended that spark plugs be changed every 100,000 miles.
Air filter. The air filter should be replaced every 15,000 to 30,000 miles or at least every three years.
This is dependent on the usual driving conditions. For example, if you frequently travel on unpaved roads, your air filter will need to be changed more frequently.
Fuel, ignition, and emissions systems. All hoses and sensors should be examined for wear and functionality. The oxygen sensor, in particular, can be of concern.
In newer vehicles, the recommendation is that they are replaced after 100,000 miles. Fuel injectors and valves should be replaced after 50,000 miles.
Overall condition of the engine. They should be rotated every 6,000 to 8,000 miles or every six months. They should also be inspected for damage and for adequate tread.
Tires. They should be rotated every 6,000 to 8,000
miles or every six months. They should also be inspected for damage and for adequate tread.
Other filters, hoses, and belts. These should be checked for wear and changed, as needed.
Times have changed
Of course, you need to stay on top of the routine care and maintenance that is recommended for your vehicle to stay in peak condition and extend its life.
A good rule of thumb is to follow the suggestions provided in your car’s manual.
